The law creates a framework for a subnational electricity market, promotes renewable energy sources, and establishes the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC).
Formation of the commission was announced by the Governor in early April 2026, pioneer commissioners nominated on April 16, 2026 and officially inaugurated on June 4, 2026.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) subsequently signed an order to transfer regulatory oversight of the state's electricity market to AKSERC, taking effect on August 18, 2026.
